An elegant crunch TTRPG with class-less leveling, a creative magic engine, and deadly combat. Allow me to go into detail…
Along the Leyline is a fantasy tabletop roleplaying game. The mechanics are simple and streamlined while still offering interesting tactical choices and deep strategy. The magic system is flexible and encourages creative thinking. Characters level quickly making the game ideal for groups who cannot commit to long campaigns, but still want to see their characters grow.
Blazing Fast Combat
This game was made for speed. It was made to make combat epic and fast. One roll determines to hit and damage. It uses step dice to minimize the math. Resulting in blazing fast combat resolution. But that isn't to say it is over-simplified. When characters are attacked they can use their reaction to defend. If they don't they take the full attack. So when and what to use your reaction on keeps tactics lively.
Classless Leveling
Characters get feats that give them unique abilities. Feats are organized into classes to make it easy to find what works well together. But players are not restricted to pulling feats from just one class. They can pick from any class. It is a lot of fun to find combos in the feats and make busted characters.
Busted characters can have a lot of power, but a well-placed attack can take out anyone. HP is low to keep the stakes high. In addition, if players fail too many body saves or death saves they die. So even high HP characters can be quickly threatened.
Lifepath character creation gives you story seeds that you can use to grow an interesting narrative. Or if you want a character fast, use the quick generation.
As you play, characters progress naturally. Roll high and get a tick, three ticks and that skill increases. When you find gold you get experience. 100 experience to level up. Every level gain some HP or MP. Every three levels gain a feat.
Unique Magic System
Oh, and there's magic! You make spells by combining elements and forms. For instance, if you know the elements fire and earth and the forms cone and cube, you can make a fire cone, fire cube, earth cone, and earth cube. If you want even more freedom with your spells you can take the sorcery feat which lets you do anything you can imagine in a confined space. Sounds broken, I know, but when characters fail their cast, they lose mind points (MP). When they run out of mind points they go insane or fall into an endless slumber. Magic is powerful, but not without its risks.
If you want sword-clashing combat, simple consistent rules that fade into the background, and quick leveling to feel that progress, this game is for you!
